Numbers add up for district economy

MINHANG'S economy has developed rapidly in the 20 years since the district was officially formed.

Industrial production, foreign investment and per-capita personal spending have all showed great strides in the two decades, according to the Minhang Statistics Bureau.

Industrial growth has been a key driver of the economy. Gross annual production value surged to 400 billion yuan (US$63.5 billion) last year from 7.2 billion yuan in 1992.

More than 100 multinational companies have operations in the district, and advanced technology is now a primary pillar of future growth.

Commercial zones have been set up to encourage growth in the services sector - areas such as the Xinzhuang transport hub, Xinzhuang Business Area, Hongqiao Business Area and Qibao Ecological Business Area.

Many companies, such as Jiefang Press Group, one of the biggest newspaper groups in Shanghai, have moved their main operations to Minhang.

The economic success of the district has improved the lifestyle of Minhang residents. Families today own more durable goods, such as cars, cell phones, air conditioners and computers, according to the statistics bureau.

In 1992, former paramount leader Deng Xiaoping visited the newly formed administrative district of Minhang and urged it to "grasp the historic opportunity to develop faster and better."

Sun Chao, Party secretary of the district today, said Deng's exhortation remains an inspiration even now as Minhang looks forward to a brighter future.

"We'll improve our economic structure so that it fits the sustainable development of today, and we will make the lives of our people better," said Sun.
