Old films revived by new technology
A Chinese classic film festival was held at Macalline Cinema World on Wuzhong Road at the end of December, screening vintage movies restored with a technology known as 4K resolution.
The films, including “Early Spring,” “Heroes and Heroines,” and “The Crow and the Sparrow,” are familiar to people middle-aged or older.
“It starred Shangguan Yunzhu and Zhao Dan,” said a senior citizen waiting for “The Crow and the Sparrow” screening to start. “I like both actors. It’s great to see these movies back in a cinema.”
The 1949 film shows the lifestyle of Shanghai residents back in that era. The film quality, however, had deteriorated because it hadn’t been stored well.
With support from national fund, the China Film Archive was able to restore a dozen of the old films.
“The films go through a digital scanning process, and every frame is cleaned of scratches or mold,” said Shi Chuan, a professor at the Shanghai Theatre Academy. “The finished product is a film in its original look but with higher definition.”
This year is the 100th anniversary of actress Shangguan Yunzhu’s birth, and the screening of her 1949 film pays tribute to her and to an earlier generation of artists.
“My mother passed away half a century ago, when she was only 48,” said Wei Ran, Shangguan’s son. “It’s so comforting to see such a clear image of her on the screen.”
