Policy to aid farms, lift rural incomes

THE Minhang District government is encouraging contracted land to be turned into cooperatives of family farmers to improve the management or rural properties.

About 80 percent of the district's farmland is now managed by 92 cooperatives.

"This policy helps to ensure the quality and safety of agricultural products, promote the combination of production and marketing and increase farm incomes," said Tang Guoliang, who is in charge of the Huiliang Farming Cooperative.

"Minhang is on its way to achieving modern urban agriculture," he added. "I'm proud to be part of it."

Huiliang Cooperative also assists farmers in buying seedlings to ensure quality of produce. Marketing is done in local shops and also on e-commerce platforms.

Shanghai Pinyun Logistics was set up four years ago in Yongxin Village in Pujiang Town to provide a sales channel for farmers and give them greater surety in prices and quantities.

"Running a farming business like an enterprise can directly benefit farm incomes," said Gu Yuliang, chairman of the company. "In traditional agriculture, farmers do their own marketing."

"The economy of scale works against them. Modern cooperatives can increase added value to the products they produce."
