Project nurtures passion for dancing at a young age
AN education program called “Dancing to the Future” has proven its success time and time again in the last six years.
Sponsored by the National Dance Institute of the US, the American-Chinese Cultural Association, the China Welfare Institute Children’s Palace and the Minhang Education Commission, the program aims to give every child the chance to learn dancing for enjoyment and exercise.
The project has been underway in more than 20 schools in the district since 2012.
Xu Ke, a student at Wenlai Secondary School, said dancing helped boost his self-confidence.
“I had my first dance class in the third grade in primary school, and the year after that, I joined a dance club,” he said. “I’ve learned everything from ballet to folk dancing.”
Xu is one of the most prominent examples of the program’s success. He has performed on the stages of the Shanghai International Dance Center and the Mercedes-Benz Arena.
“Dancing has worked miracles in all aspects of my life, including my academic performance,” Xu said. “The five years I spent in the project are my happiest days.”
The program has an annual theme, from shadow puppet to modern dancing, and it tries to blend Chinese traditional dancing styles into the dances taught.
Every year, the project presents two dancing shows, and it sent a group to perform at the Milan Expo in 2015.
Some 150 students are the members of the dancing club.
The education commission said it plans to expand the program to all schools in the district.
