Pujiang book puts network on the map
ZHOU Shuming never imagined that he could hold a book signing activity for his "Selected Folk Nursery Rhymes in Pudong" at the same time as China celebrated its National Day.
The activity was staged on Yandang Road, a fashion landmark near Huaihai Road. Zhou couldn't have made it without help from Gu Zhongyi and his Pujiang Town community network.
After deciding to stage a creative market on Yandang Road during the Shanghai Tourism Festival, Gu and his colleagues set a goal of promoting Pujiang Town culture as a priority.
For over 20 years, Zhou has been collecting and researching nursery rhymes in Pudong. He was invited to the market together with members of a karate and aikido association in Pujiang.
The community not only introduced Pujiang culture to downtown residents, but also set the stage for developing local enterprises. It released a Pujiang card, which links over 90 percent of merchants in Pujiang. Thanks to the community's promotion, many local businesses realized their dream of "rocketing out of Pujiang."
Local government is also supportive in developing the community. "This kind of active and healthy community is beneficial and important for development of the whole area," said an executive of the local publicity department.
Lu Genfa, a resident, feels the community has influenced people's life in many ways. As a shutterbug, he uploaded some of the photos he took and won a second prize in a "Pujiang Impressions" photograph competition.
Over 3,000 members have registered on the network since 2008, and many more are involved in this family, according to Gu, the initiator.
