Rare antique plate donated

A local man living in the Chenhang Old Street in Pujiang Town has donated a late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) engraved wooden plate to the Minhang Cultural Heritage Office.

The plate is carved with ancient door gods holding auspicious Spring Festival couplets. Experts say it is very valuable for the district's folk culture and research.

The donor, Hu Yanshuo said he found it in a clean-up before he moved to a new house.

It was popular to decorate residences with paintings of door gods and blessings in ancient Chenhang. Such engraved plates are rare these days. The 60-year-old man also provided more than 20 antique items, such as a glass oil lamp, a dipper-like bin used to measure one dou of rice (a dou equals one decaliter), old photos, a rattan-made suitcase and other items. The oil lamp still works well today.

Pujiang Town is collecting various old agricultural tools, cooking utensils and vessels to set up a folk culture exhibition. When the collection is completed, it is expected to be open to the public by the end of the year.
