School rallies to aid sick pupil
WHEN a big birthday cake with 15 candles was put in the middle of the room of Class Two, Grade Three in Qibao Experimental School, a birthday song sounded out.
And all the students in the room greeted birthday boy Xu Haichun with warm "Happy Birthday" wishes when he was pushed into the classroom in his wheelchair by the headmaster.
Suffering the congenital amyasthenia (a disease that makes the muscles tire extremely easily), this 15-year-old cannot be regarded in any way as a lucky boy. But fortunately, there're always many helpers around him, giving him love and making him strong.
"Since he got this disease, the treatment and education have become the two biggest problems of our family," Xu Haichun's father says.
When Xu was very young, he could still walk. But as he grew the disease became more and more difficult to treat. Now he can just move with the wheelchair. However, the Qibao Experimental School still accepted this special student.
For this boy, the school has made a lot of adjustments. They give the elevator key to Xu's father to make it easier to get up and down floors. And the school also bought a wheelchair for him. Last year, there were a couple of days when the elevator didn't work, and it was Xu's teachers and classmates that carried him upstairs.
It's about 15 minutes' walk from Xu's home to the school. Originally his dad and aunt took him to school everyday, until one day when one of Xu's classmates, Jiang Sen, volunteered to take on the job. From that day, Jiang goes to Xu's home every morning on time and pushes him to school.
Jiang is not alone. All of his schoolmates are kind helpers. They take lunch to him, chat with him and help him in study.
"We never give him any pressure. We just want him to be happy," says Xu's father.
The help really works. Xu doesn't miss a single lesson, and even studies very well, winning a lot of prizes in various contests.
This year is the last year for Xu in Qibao Experimental School, but his health situation continuously deteriorates - he cannot go upstairs without help. The school gives him an office on the ground floor as his classroom and all the 16 teachers of grade three teach him when they're free.
Although Xu is not a talkative boy, he appreciates in his heart all the people who have helped him.
"I'm strong, because of love," says Xu. "I'll alter my destiny."
And he's looking to the future with a plan - entering Tsinghua University.
"I feel very fortunate that he's here," says Zha Jiansheng, headmaster of Qibao Experimental School. "His strong faith encourages all of us. He's a model for our school."
