Strike up the music for dancing in the streets
Outdoor dancing has always been popular in China, especially among middle-aged and older people.
Nowadays, it’s all the rage to hold dancing events in the evening after dinner. Square dancing, ballroom dancing, ethnic dancing. They are all popular.
Minhang is no exception. Dancers regard it as a good form of exercise and an excellent way to socialize with neighbors. In some cases, however, the loud music of boom boxes used by the dancers has stirred complaints of excessive noise from nearby residents.
The dances are egalitarian. Vegetable sellers, retired neighborhood officials and white collar workers all join together. Some form teams and compete in contests.
Shanghai Daily talked with some dancing devotees to find out why this activity has become so popular in neighborhood areas.
