Take the plunge! Local swim centers offer a cool getaway from summer heat

ON a hot summer's day, when cold air conditioning inside can be as annoying as the hot temperatures outside, there's nothing quite like a swimming pool for relaxation, exercise and even socializing. Minhang offers many pools for summer recreational enjoyment. They're cool!

Swimming Pool in Haoshi Lumin Garden

The swimming pool in the neighborhood of Haoshi Lumin Garden was opened last summer by the Yili Sports Club. It's a membership club for neighborhood residents and charges slightly higher fees for non-residents.

The pool is on the second floor of the club. It's 25 meters long and 12 meters wide, with water to a depth of 1.25 meters. The water is purified by ozone, and the pool is served by a 24-hour circulating water treatment system.

Alongside the pool is a music bar, with a piano, black couches and blue easy chairs. From there you can sit and watch the pool through a glass window while you sip tea or coffee. The black player piano needs no pianist. It automatically fills the area with entertaining sounds geared to a mood of relaxation.

"Many members like to take a break in the music bar after swimming," says one employee at the pool. "And parents who bring their children here for swimming lessons also like to sit there and watch how the kids are doing."

The club also features a wooden sauna in the bathhouse. Besides that, there's also a Jacuzzi-style tub for refreshing body massage. An annual membership card at the club costs 3,600 yuan (US$530).

Opening Hours: 9am-10pm (Monday-Saturday);

9am-9pm (on Sundays)

Wanke Holiday Swimming Pool

If you are looking for something slightly cheaper, the Wanke Holiday Swimming Pool has two outdoor pools and one indoor pool open to the public.

The two outdoor pools include an adult pool and a children's pool, and the indoor one is for adults. The adult pools are each 25 meters long, 12 meters wide and 1.3 meters deep, while the children's pool is 12 meters by 7 meters by 0.8 meters. A membership here entitles the holder to use all the pools and an adjoining fitness center.

The price of an annual VIP card is around 3,000 yuan (US$441).

Since it opened last July, the pool facility has proven very popular.

The pools are set in a landscaping of trees and flowers that provide a restful atmosphere from the grit and noise and urban life.

Open Hours: 9am-10pm (Monday-Saturday); 9am-9pm (on Sundays)

Address: No.48, Lane 99, Wanting Rd

Qibao Middle School Swimming Pool

The swimming pool in Qibao Middle School opened in June of 2008. It's an indoor 50-meter pool of international standards, with clean water and good environment.

The pool offers an array of lessons and training courses provided by professional coaches. It's a perfect place to teach children how to swim.

The price here is an advantage. It costs 25 yuan 90 minutes in the pool, which is cheap compared to other pools. An annual membership costs 2,800 yuan, and for people 50 years and older, there's a senior discount price of only 1,600 yuan.
