Transit, food safety upgraded for Shanghai tennis tourney

MINHANG is planning to put its best face forward and boost its tourism credentials during the ATP 1000 Shanghai Rolex Masters, to be held in the district's Qizhong Tennis Center from October 8-16.

To that end, extra efforts are under way to facilitate transport to the event and ensure the safety of food sold to fans.

An express bus will be added, linking the tournament site on Yuanjiang Road to the Xinzhuang metro station. Buses on the route will also stop at the Zhuanqiao station of Metro Line 5. The fare is 2 yuan (30 US cents).

"We hope to provide the most efficient and convenient transportation service to spectators," said Yang Yibin, a chief organizer.

The first bus will depart from Xinzhuang at 11am and the last bus will leave from there at 7pm. At Qizhong, the first bus will depart at 10am and the last bus will be at 10pm. Intervals will be between three and 15 minutes. The trip takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Traffic is considered a major factor affecting spectator enthusiasm for an event, according to a survey conducted by the organizers. The tennis site is far from downtown areas, and traffic along the route can be congested.

Jiang Yi, a tennis buff who lives on Dagu Road in Jing'an District, said it is time-consuming to take public transport from his home to the venue.

"First I have to take Metro Line 2," said Jiang. "Then I transfer to Metro Line 1 at People's Square and arrive at the Xinzhuang terminal. But the trip isn't over yet. I then have to transfer to Metro Line 5 and get off at the Zhuanqiao station before I can get on the shuttle bus to reach the stadium."

Under the new arrangement, Jiang will no longer need to take Metro Line 5 because he can take the express bus from Xinzhuang directly to the stadium.

Food safety

Night shuttle bus service has been added to the route because the last match of the day may conclude late and spectators may miss the last train on Metro Line 1 in Xinzhuang.

From October 9 to 15, the bus will transport fans to the Caoxi Road public transport hub near the Shanghai Stadium.

It will run from 9:30pm to 30 minutes after the last match concludes. The bus fare is 10 yuan.

Getting to the venue is one concern. Eating is another.

Minhang food safety authorities will be monitoring everything from kitchens to tableware to check for unwanted microbes. Even the hands of food servers will come under scrutiny.

"We will be using advanced methods to ensure that standards are met," said Shen Yanzhong, an official in charge of food supervision in the district.

Fresh food ingredients will not be allowed to sit overnight, he said. Tennis players wanting fresh vegetable or fruit salads are told to prepare and bring their own food.

Minhang sees the tennis tournament as an excellent opportunity to promote itself as a tourist destination.

Maps of the district's scenic attractions will be prominently displayed at the arena. Promotional videos of Minhang will be screened.

Although Roger Federer, a record 16-time grand slam winner, has pulled out of the event, the tournament still promises to be a star-studded attraction.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia, 10-time grand slam champion Rafael Nadal and Scotland's Andy Murray, who claimed last year's Shanghai Rolex Masters title, are set to play.

Federer begged off, saying he needed "to take some necessary time to rest and recuperate after a long summer. I have some nagging injuries that I need to address."

It is the second time the Swiss player, currently ranked world No. 3, has pulled out of the Shanghai tournament. He withdrew in 2009 due to injuries.

Federer, 30, won the Masters Cup in Shanghai in 2006 and 2007 and was runner-up last year after he lost to Murray.
