Tying the knot with merry flair

NEW Fashion Wedding, Minhang's attempt to embellish bureaucracy with a bit of romance, has been designated as one of China's "high-quality service brands" by the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

The Minhang District Marriage Registration Office adopted the brand name for a new service about eight years ago. Prior to that, it was your standard lackluster government office, where couples officially wed with just a bit of paperwork marking the magic moment in their lives.

Now it's marriage with a nice touch of fanfare.

Couples may wear wedding attire when they appear in the office. They walk along a red carpet and can bring along family and friends. The "service" even provides TV and movie celebrities as witnesses on occasion.

The office has been re-decorated into a wedding hall, equipped with a dressing room and a formal waiting room. Flowers and lights gave the office a decidedly romantic atmosphere.

In the eight years since the transformation, about 60,000 couples have participated in the popular New Fashion Wedding service, and the trend is catching on with other registry offices in Shanghai.
