Workshop for autistic moves to lower rent
Xingyue Workshop, a non-profit facility that helps autistic children, moved to new quarters near Xinzhuang Metro station.
Founded in 2017, the workshop offers skills training, including painting and ceramics.
Due to limited funding, the facility had to be set up in an industrial park where Minhang and Songjiang districts meet. Some parents of the children have complained that the site is too far away and transport is inconvenient.
鈥淲e live in the downtown area, and it took us two hours to get here,鈥 said one parent.
But at least one student had no complaints.
鈥淣ow I can just walk to the workshop to join my friends there,鈥 said a boy named Tiantian.
Relocation
The relocation occurred after careful planning. Minhang authorities helped find the new location after hearing of the workshop鈥檚 plight. The new rent is lower by about half.
More than 20 volunteers assisted in the move.
The new landlord, Zhengshen Industrial, has pledged an annual donation to the workshop.
鈥淥ur children have been making a lot of progress in the past three years,鈥 said Ouyang Dongqing, director of Xingyue. 鈥淭heir abilities are growing, and we think this new site will result in even more progress in the future.鈥
Apart from its training activities, the workshop also plans to set up a milk tea shop where autistic children can work and become more socially integrated in the broader community.
