Wuzhong Road car sales in a higher gear
A SURVEY from the Minhang District Economic and Trade Committee shows that car sales on Wuzhong road are gradually warming up since the end of last year.
It may indicate the end of the auto market slump caused by the economic crisis.
As a feature street lined with vehicle outlets and 4S stores, Wuzhong Road, home to car brands like Volkswagen, General Motors, Toyota and Hyundai, is always an indicator for Minhang's car sales.
The report shows that the 14 car retailers on the road had a total sales volume of 310 million yuan (US$45.6 million) last December, a 42 percent month-on-month increase, greatly boosted by the Minhang shopping season which ran from last November to February.
"Promotional activities, such as the free car maintenance for the first year, have attracted many customers to the store," said Zhang Wei, sales manager of the Chevrolet outlet on Wuzhong Road. "January's sales were far beyond our expectation. The sales volume of some compact cars such as Lova and AVEO even doubled."
Zhang was quite optimistic about the market. "The economic crisis has delayed some people's car purchasing, which greatly affected last year's sales," the manager said. "But the potential is still there. What it needs is a stronger boost."
The South Korean auto maker Hyundai also changed its strategy to cater for the market, due to the increase of fuel costs. Sales manager Xu Yunfeng said that they cut the price by 10 percent, which made the store's sales volume double in December.
"The shopping season also added a lot to the sales increase," Xu added.
