Xinzhuang sets up a farmers' cooperative

SHANGHAI'S first cooperative society for farmers was recently established in the Xinzhuang Industrial Park, Minhang District.
The cooperative society is made up of more than 5,000 farmers from six villages. At the inauguration conference held earlier this month, 97 farmer representatives elected the society's first council and board of supervisors.
Villagers who are shareholders will earn dividends and income each year depending on the profits from the industrial park.
Because of land requisition for the economic development area, many villagers have no more land to farm. This society will benefit villagers who lost their land.
"The farmers' specialized cooperative society becomes an effective way for villagers to participate in market competition, expand their business and increase their income," said Zhang Jindi, director of the industrial park.
