Building Valley of the Sun
A solar valley is under construction in Nanhui Industrial Park that aims to become a solar energy center in three to five years.
The 5.5-square-kilometer area will represent an integrated industrial chain, from research into new energy to design, development and product manufacturing.
Wind power will also be a part.
The area will be home to companies that develop solar technology and manufacture solar cells, as well as LED electronics and wind power pioneers.
By the end of 2012, the total annual output value is expected to reach 5 billion yuan (US$735 million).
Shanghai Sun-hi Solar recently broke ground on an 8.2-hectare project with an investment of 1.2 billion yuan. It will be one of the country's largest manufacturers of solar cells, modules and other equipment.
When it goes into full operation, the thin film solar production lines are expected to generate 150 megawatt annually; the production lines of amorphous silicon solar cells will turn out 50 megawatt each year. The annual output value of both will reach 2.2 billion yuan.
Tenants include Shanghai Comtec Solar Technology Co Ltd (a leading Shanghai-based manufacturer of monocrystalline solar wafers), ProPower Renewable Energy (Shanghai) Co Ltd, Shanghai Aeolon Wind Energy Technology Development Co Ltd and Red Maple Wind Blade Mould Co Ltd, among others.
