Air hub to get more parking, new terminal

A parking lot expansion project at Pudong International Airport will cover more than 40,000 square meters of land.

Additional parking spaces will be built on the site surrounded by Qihang Road E., Haitian Road No.4, Yuanhang Road E. and Haitian Road No.5. After a public hearing, the plan was approved to meet the demand for long-term parking at the airport, which is expected to cope with 80 million travelers annually after 2019.

The project is part of the Phase III expansion of the airport, which officially started at the end of last year. It will be more difficult for the current infrastructure facilities at the airport to handle the soaring number of travelers in the future, particularly after the launch of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone and Shanghai Disneyland.

Pudong airport handled 60 million of travelers last year, which surpassed the designed capacity.

The Phase III expansion involves the world’s largest satellite terminal, which is composed of two linked satellite halls, to cope with an additional 38 million of travelers annually.

The H-shaped terminal — divided into halls named S1 and S2 — will be connected with terminals 1 and 2 through underground trains. It is expected to be completed by 2019.

S1 will mainly serve China Eastern Airlines, Shanghai Airlines and other SkyTeam carriers, while S2 will serve Air China, China Southern and other Star Alliance airlines.

With 83 departure gates and about 120 new parking stands for aircraft, the third terminal will cover a total area of 620,000 square meters — larger than the 490,000-square-meter Terminal 2 building.
