Students' stem cell donor scheme marks 10th year
A decade ago, 28 graduating seniors from Putuo's Jinyuan High School formed a list of potential hemopoietic stem cell donors, after a classmate was diagnosed with leukemia, a fatal blood disease.
They started a tradition that has been carried on by the students ever since. Over the years a total of 1,984 volunteers have signed up.
Earlier this year, a ceremony was held at the music square on campus for new volunteers joining the hemopoietic stem cell donor scheme.
In late 2003, a student at the high school was diagnosed with leukemia. Students donated money to the parents, but no match for a stem cell donor could be found.
The students set up their own list with the Red Cross, and 28 volunteers passed the physical examination.
With the approval of parents and support of the school, they became the first group of students enlisted in the Shanghai branch of Chinese stem cell donor registry from Jinyuan High School.
A few years back, two students became volunteers before graduating from high school.
In 2010, volunteer Zheng Qinwen's sample was a match for a patient, and the surgery proved a success.
He was the first successful donor from Jinyuan.
"I was praised for being a hero for doing something which was not that difficult to do. But my help meant a lot to the patient and her family," Zheng said.
"I really wish more people could realize that the entire process, from joining the registry to actually donating, isn't difficult or painful or a sacrifice," added Zheng.
