Carnival season marks onset of golden autumn festivities
The 11th Roots of Shanghai Culture Festival and the Songjiang Shopping Festival kick off on September 17 and run through the middle October.
Folk performances, fashion shows, village tours and cultural activities will turn the golden autumn into a season of carnivals.
The theme park Happy Valley will host an international magic festival, featuring magicians from more than 10 countries.
Shanghai Film Park, a filmmaking center built in the style of 1930s Shanghai, will hold a nostalgia exhibition, displaying rickshaws and other items from Old Shanghai. Parents may bring their children to see the street games they once played when they were small. In addition, folk artists will give live shows in the park. A qipao fashion show highlighting the close-fitting dress that marked high style from 1912-49 will also be staged.
Shanghai Tianma Circuit will host three racing competitions, including the Cup of Art of Speed Racing, the Angel Cup and a one-lap amateur race.
From September 28 to October 9, Shanghai Wanchun Garden will host its fifth stone exhibition, with more than 1,000 natural and carved stones on display.
The district’s Tourism Festival will be held September 14-18. Many attractions, including Happy Valley, Chenshan Botanic Park, Shanghai Sculpture Park, Shanghai Film Park, Fangta Park and Zuibai Pond Park, will offer half-price admission. From September 17-27, Sheshan Hill National Forest Park, Tianma Park and the Xiaokunshan Hill will also cut entry fees by half.
The Shopping Festival, running through October 11, will feature the launch of Weibo microblog and Weixin micro-message site Lehuo Songjiang, or “happy living in Songjiang,” to attract more young people.
The festival will be highlighted by promotional food sales in local plazas and shopping malls. A food fete will feature traditional Songjiang delicacies, while gourmets will also be able to watch live demonstrations by celebrated chefs.
Students in Songjiang University Town will compete for prizes in a design and marketing contest.
In response to the nationwide campaign to promote frugality in government, opening ceremonies for the festivals have been pared from traditional grand galas.
