Easy transfers as tram extension opens

Tram Line T1’s east-end extension to Xinqiao Railway Station began operating on December 30, providing easy transfer to the Jinshan Railway sub-line.

Starting from Xinmiaosan Road Station, it passes four new stations to reach its destination of Xinqiao Railway Station. The single running time of Tram Line T1 takes 51 minutes and it takes an average 19 minutes for a commute through Jinshan Railway sub-line from Xinqiao Railway Station to Shanghai South Railway Station.

The interchange schedule of the tram line is linked to that of the railway line, with the earliest tram arriving ahead of the railway schedule and the last leaving after the final train pulls in.

“We did an assessment on the passenger flow of the extended line and also inquired about traffic data from the Jinshan Railway sub-line. Passenger flow is estimated to be larger around Songjiang Economic Development Zone, Xinqiao Town and Xinqiao Railway Station,” said Dai Bin, manager of the Shanghai Keolis Public Transport Operation Management Co project.

The waiting interval of Tram Line T1 has been adjusted to about 20 minutes, and will be further adjusted according to passenger flow, Dai said.

The tram car system in Songjiang District is Shanghai’s first networked tram car system. It connects Songjiang’s old and new urban areas and important commercial zones, and offers passengers easy transfer with Metro Line 9 and Jinshan Railway sub-line.
