Ferry’s sad farewell
THE century-old Dongsandu ferry finished its historic run on April 30, taking the last group of passengers from Maogang Town to Shihudang Town.
The ferry, located in Dongxia Village on the Yuanxie River, was the only way for local farmers to travel between Shihudang and Maogang Town for the past 100 years. However, following completion of the Chenta Road-Hengliaojing Bridge, river passengers dwindled.
“During its heyday, almost 2,000 passengers used the ferry every day,” said ferry Captain Shen Jinshun, who has been pl¡ying the river for four decades. “Then it became no more than 100. The ferry facilities improved, but the passenger numbers fell just the same.”
After the last ferry run, Shen locked the door of the ferry terminal and packed his things.
