Fruit lovers’ pick of the crop

SUMMER is the season for fresh, juicy fruit.

At the Songjiang Jinmao Grape Garden in Maogang Town, more than 40 varieties of grapes are ripening and ready for picking.

This July, early season varieties such as green Luosha, red Auguste and purple Xiahei grapes are at their best.

Visitors to the farm can pick what they want straight from the vines. Grape-picking is open to the public through the middle of September.

The garden operates under the auspices of the College of Agriculture at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The center has been actively introducing new breeds from Japan, Italy, Russia and Moldova.

Many breeds are rare in the market, such as the Russian grape. It can grow to be bigger than a one-yuan coin in diameter and weighs up to 15 grams, nearly double the weight of an ordinary grape.
