Happy shoppers, bustling tills

WANDA Plaza, the largest shopping center in Songjiang District, has logged 2.3 million customers since it opened on May 30, with sales reaching 150 million yuan (US$24 million), the local government said.

The numbers make the new center one of the most successful in Wanda’s nationwide 80-plus store chain.

Songjiang Wanda is the fifth department store in the Wanda chain in Shanghai. It set a record of 280,000 customers and 18 million yuan in sales on the first day it opened.

Since then, the plaza has had daily average turnover of more than 70,000 people, with 6,000 cars entering the plaza parking lot every day.

To attract customers, Songjiang Wanda offered a series of first-month discounts. It also raffled gold bars, and sold food and drinks at half price.

For Fathers’ Day and during the World Cup games, the center set up table soccer games and staged beer-drinking contests.

There have also been free movie passes, video games and nail and skin care services offered.

The 42 eateries in the center chalked up revenue of 33.6 million yuan in the first month.

Topping sales were the Xibei, Harvest Festival and Akasakatei restaurants.
