Left Pocket’s ‘Star’ shines at animation festival

“Star Bright,” an original animated short film created by Songjiang-based Shanghai Left Pocket Animation Studio, recently won the Laboral Kutxa Award in the Bilbao International Animation Community Festival, or Animakom Fest, in Spain.

“Star Bright” was co-produced by an Emmy-nominated Spanish team and a renowned Chinese director team. The film features friendship among characters in a magic forest.

The film is also a brand extension of Left Pocket’s fantasy fairy-tale series “Emmy Gooroo,” which has won about 20 awards at home and abroad including the top prize of MIP Junior International Pitch and Pitch-it award of Kidscreen East. More than 50 TV stations and online platforms globally have broadcast the series.

Established in 2012, Left Pocket Studio focuses on producing original animations for preschool and school-age children, as well as comics and animated films for teenagers.

As its office in Spain and a branch in Malaysia have been set up, Left Pocket Studio also helps training local talent with education institutes in the two countries.

“Our company is called Left Pocket, because the left pocket of a jacket is the nearest place to one’s heart, suggesting our company will whole-heartedly produce the most sincere work for our viewers,” said Yu Xin, the studio’s CEO and an industrial consultant in the animation department at the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts in Songjiang.
