Looking your best is key to finding a job, and shopkeepers are happy to lend a hand
IN Songjiang’s University Town, young entrepreneurs — mostly college graduates — are seizing the opportunity to offer “job hunting” services for those turning from studies to careers.
From identification photos, resume polishing and interview clothes rentals, shops along Wenhui Road are providing one-stop services for students.
One-stop services
“A suit rented in our shop costs less than 500 yuan (US$81.70),” said storekeeper Hu Zhanye.
“A similar outfit suitable for an interview would cost at least 2,000 yuan in a department store, which would be hard for a student to afford. In addition, we offer free advice on interviewing techniques to our customers.”
Two years ago, there was only one clothing rental shop in University Town, but today, the area is awash with similar services.
Hu graduated from a college in University Town last year. The young man saw a business opportunity in job-hunting services and opened his shop this year. Although only about 15 square meters in size, his shop stocks everything a graduate might need for an interview.
“We’ve got suits, ties, leather shoes and shirts in all sizes and at reasonable prices,” he said.
To set up the service of providing interviewing skills, Hu invited classmates and friends who had successfully landed good jobs to share their practical experiences. They also help polish customer resumes.
Business start-up
Chen Li, who quit an accountant job in a major auditing firm, started her own business in University Town this year.
“The first impression given in an interview is crucial to successful job hunting,” she said. “Many college students don’t know how to dress properly when looking for jobs, and I am here to help them.”
Chen’s shop offers a wide variety of suitable clothing to help customers look smart. She helps them choose what’s right for them and gives tips on accessories and make-up. Resume polishing is also on offer.
“The key is to be elegant and dignified, so I often tell girls not to overdo Photoshop on their pictures,” Chen said. “And I feel happy each time someone lands a good job and calls to share their joy with me.”
