Promoting tourist sites for business and for pleasure
One of the more rapidly growing segments of Songjiang’s tourism industry is providing facilities for meetings, incentive trips, conferences and exhibitions. In industry lingo it’s called MICE.
According to the 2015 Songjiang District Business Travel Road Show, this burgeoning segment is to be integrated with mainstream tourism services.
One popular sub-group is provision of facilities and services to the wedding industry, from bridal banquets to honeymoons and anniversary celebrations.
Best scenery in Shanghai
The district wants to promote what is has to offer: large, modern facilities, some of the best scenery in Shanghai, convenient transport links and expert auxiliary services. Songjiang is becoming a popular destination for companies to hold business meetings or arrange exhibits of their products and services.
In 2014, the district’s 16 major hotels hosted 1.1 million people.
Of those, 43 percent of stays were related to business meetings. There were almost 5,000 business delegations, 441 of them from foreign-invested company and 170 from companies with annual revenue of more than 300,000 yuan (US$48,345).
MICE events usual combine business and leisure activities. They are viewed as top-end profit-spinners. Industrial development and expansion of universities and colleges in Songjiang have helped bring in more business for conventions and academic conferences.
Wedding parties
Songjiang has 541 hotels, with more than 28,000 beds. Fifty-one top ranked hotels and resorts have more than 80 beds each.
Their 120 conference rooms can accommodate 12,000 people at any one time.
Songjiang’s scenic beauty and its location away from urban bustle and traffic jams make it a popular place for wedding parties.
Newlyweds flock to scenic sites for their official portraits, favoring places like Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden, Sheshan National Forest Park, Thames Town and the Shanghai Film Park.
Rose Wedding, a renowned wedding organizer, worked with Chenshan Botanical Garden to promote its ideal setting and facilities at the Milan World Expo 2015.
Gao Guoxiang, deputy director of the Commerce and Tourism Commission of Songjiang, said modern young couples are always looking for new twists to make their weddings unique and exciting. Many are seeking church ceremonies or even taking their vows in a waterfront park.
“Everything they need is here,” he said. “And we also want to promote ourselves as a romantic destination
for honeymoons.”
