Saving a life with his stem cells

Zhao Jiahui, a staff member at the Community Affairs Acceptance and Services Center in Jiuting Town, Songjiang District, completed a hematopoietic stem cell donation on September 14.
Zhao is the second donor in Songjiang this year, the 36th overall in the district and the 542nd in Shanghai.
In May of 2019, Zhao registered with the China Marrow Donor Program. In May of this year, he received a notice from the Red Cross Society of Shanghai informing him that his stem cell sample had been successfully matched with a patient.
"I was a bit surprised at the time,” Zhao said. “I didn't expect to be one of the hundreds of thousands of lucky dogs."
In July, Zhao passed the high-resolution typing test and physical examination, which strengthened his determination to donate.
However, just three days prior to being admitted, he had a fever. Fortunately, the hospital confirmed the fever was only a result of common inflammation, and he simply had to wait until it subsided.
"I've always been in good health. Perhaps I was too excited at the critical moment," Zhao said with a smile.
Two days later, his fever was gone and his physical examination showed nothing abnormal.
Then Zhao prepared for admission as planned. He and his wife agreed to leave their two children with their grandparents.
When the time came, the children were reluctant to part. Zhao comforted them by saying, "If you can use your own blood to save another person's life one day, will you do that?”
"We sure will!" The children replied.
"Good, Dad is going to do it now,” Zhao said.
After four days of preparation, Zhao walked into the collection room on the morning of September 14. The couple had also prepared a small gift for the recipient — a sandalwood peace key pendant.
"We only know that the receiver is a woman. We hope she gets well soon," Zhao said.
