Technology corridor a game-changer

THE district’s campaign to change the slogan “made in Songjiang” to “high-tech Songjiang” is gaining traction with construction of G60 Shanghai Songjiang Science and Tech Corridor.

The project runs along the G60 Highway, starting at Shanghai’s Lingang City, a leading industrial park, and ending in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province.

The corridor is designed to boost technology development throughout the Yangtze River Delta, including the cities of Shanghai, Jiaxing and Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province.

The corridor in the south will include a robot center in Dongjing Town, a headquarters zone, an international eco-friendly business center, the National Songjiang Economic Development Park, the Songjiang Export Processing Zone, an incubation center for young companies in University Town and the West Songjiang High-tech Park.

“The corridor will link nine industrial parks, creating new industrial chains,” district Secretary-General Cheng Xiangmin told a conference on the corridor’s development.

The project is back by annual government funding of 2 billion yuan (US$290 million) and includes programs to attract professional talent to settle in Songjiang. By the end of 2020, the main structures of the corridor are expected to be completed.

Among the companies coming into Songjiang are Google Adwords Shanghai Center, Honeywell and Dedao Capital.

This March, a new research center broke ground in Dongjing Town at a 300,000-square-meter site called the CSG Robot Base. It was co-founded by the Institute of Science and Technology for Brain-Inspired Intelligence and by CSG, a China leader in smart manufacturing.

The site aims to manufacture robots for industrial use, medical services and artificial intelligence systems. In the future CSG robots will be able to do remote-control medical diagnosis via the Internet and offer home nursing services to the elderly.
