Tips to foil online scammers
The online shopping craze Double 11 Festival will be held tomorrow. It was initiated by Taobao.com six years ago, connecting online vendors and offline shops throughout China.
The Songjiang Consumer Protection Committee offers a few tips to help prevent shopaholics from falling victim to online scammers.
1. Ensure you are in a safe Internet environment. People who shop via public WiFi could be exposing their personal information and credit card numbers to the risk of hacking.
2. Log onto legal, licensed shopping websites. Many illegal websites are good at uploading fake sites that use similar domain names and almost identical page designs.
3. Don鈥檛 be hypnotized by low prices. Ask yourself: why is this product so cheap?
4. Always stay alert when a site calls you a 鈥渓ucky one.鈥 Many online shops send you messages saying you have won a lucky draw, but you often cannot receive your prize in cash. Instead, unsuspecting netizens are lured into the trap of buying overpriced items.
5. When purchasing merchandise, such as electronic devices, which involve large sums of money, pay through licensed, reliable third-party payment websites to reduce the risk. Keep all transaction records and ask for invoices as evidence should any disputes occur.
