Where a new school opens every month

A total of 75 schools will be built or expanded in Songjiang District during the 13th five-year plan period, with 15 new schools set up this year.

As part of the district’s bid to strengthen its educational resources, it is opening new schools at the rate of one a month.

In recent years, with the increase in the migrant population, the shortage of educational resources has become acute. To meet the increasing demand, the district is going to great lengths in pushing construction and attracting quality educational resources.

During the 12th five-year plan period, the district built and expanded 43 schools — 19 kindergartens, six primary schools, 11 nine-year schools, five high schools and two vocational schools. The 13th five-year plan period will see a sharp increase in new schools in the district, to reach 75, including 42 kindergartens, 15 primary schools, five nine-year schools, and 13 high schools.

The Songjiang Experimental School Affiliated to East China University of Political Science and Law, as the eighth school jointly established by the district and a local university, will be put into service this year. Prior to that, the district had joined with Shanghai Normal University, East China Normal University, Shanghai International Studies University, Donghua University and Shanghai University of International Business and Economcs to shape a batch of quality schools.

The Experimental School Affiliated to Donghua University is remarkable for its practical program of “Foreigners showing you around the world.” Each semester, eight international students will share the conditions and customs of their countries, so the children can tour the world without leaving home. In the Experimental School Affiliated to SUIBE, outstanding international students at the university teach oral English to students. With the help of SUIBE’s faculty team of the “Cross-Cultural Communication” course, the school developed a set of textbooks on “Chinese and Foreign Cultural Trips” targeted at school students.

The collaboration with local universities enables the district to utilize the quality educational resources and brand advantages of universities and greatly promote the development of fundamental education. At present, the district has rolled out 72 collaborative programs between the primary and high schools and the universities in Songjiang University Town, covering a variety of aspects including curriculum construction, school societies organization, teacher training, educational management and voluntary services.

The rich resources of universities also help the district education bureau set foot in higher education and vocational training.

The successful cases include an educational administration (MPA) class opened in collaboration with ECUPSL, the training for foreign language teachers rolled out with the support of SISU, and a vocational education program launched jointly with Shanghai University of Engineering Technology.
