1 million trees and counting

THE Million Trees Project was launched by Shanghai Roots and Shoots in 2007. It was created to ease desertification and improve the environment.

The first phase of the project was completed last year as 1 million trees were planted in Kunlunqi, Inner Mongolia, which suffers from water and soil loss because of over grazing and the greenhouse effect.

The organization aims to plant another 1 million trees in Inner Mongolia, near Tongliao City.

The nonprofit organization says they usually choose the trees that can survive the harsh environment and produce economic value for farmers. Farmers are also required to participate in the project, helping the organization take care of the trees.

According to the latest survey, about 86 percent of the first 1 million trees have survived.

People can also donate money for the trees. A tree costs 25 yuan (US$4), including planting and maintenance, according to the organization.

Meanwhile, the organization also arranges volunteers to plant trees in Inner Mongolia each year. Individuals who donate more than 500 trees and companies that donate more than 1,000 trees can apply for the trip.

Volunteers are required to lead a low-carbon lifestyle during the trip. They are encouraged to take their own tableware, use less bottled water and calculate their carbon emissions.
