A Romanian skylark

THE symphonic version of a famous Romanian folk song about a skylark will be performed by the National Radio Orchestra of Romania on Friday.

In addition, the orchestra will perform Enescu's "Symphony No. 1," or "Romanian Rhapsody," in the program with strong Romanian musical elements.

Famous Romanian violinist Gabriel Croitoru will play the solo lead in "Romanian Rhapsody" and "Skylark."

The orchestra will also cooperate with Chinese female pianist Xie Jingxian in Brahms' classic "Piano Concerto No. 2."

"It is rare to have both violin solo and a piano in one concert, since both are outstanding instruments with strong personalities," says Xie. "It's a gift to hear both on one occasion."

Xie says the concerto is a very physically challenging for a woman since it's 50 minutes long. Although not technically demanding, it embraces the composers philosophy, which is difficult to interpret, she says.

"The National Radio Orchestra of Romania is well received for its great presentation in both Romanian music and international works," says Alex Serbanescu, consul-general of Romania in Shanghai.
