A glass of wisdom from Scottish minister

SCOTLAND'S First Minister the Hon Alex Salmond MP addressed a crowd of local journalists ahead of next month's Whisky Live Roadshow here in Shanghai.

Salmond, whose visit also involved golf and renewable energy (a number of whisky distilleries have already switched or are considering switching to renewable energy), charmingly told the crowd of his love for a wee dram. That's the wee dram which accounts for close to a third of Scotland's manufactured exports to China, with a value of approximately US$62 million.

He pointed out that a country's produce was an indicator of its culture, and he was proud that Scotch whisky's high quality was able to speak favorably of his country.

Scotland's advantage in producing the iconic drink lies in its pristine waters and superior malt barley - key ingredients in the production of the famed spirit. While hundreds of different quality brands exist, Minister Salmond suggests local consumers discover as many as they can to find their own favorite.

"The finance mogul George Soros predicted China would lead the world out of recession, and when that happens whisky exports to China will boom - therefore whisky will lead the world out of recession," he joked.
