Activities to mark return of Hong Kong

TO celebrate the 20th anniversary of the return of Hong Kong to China, a series of activities will be held this month at the Hong Kong Plaza in downtown Shanghai under the theme of “IN Hong Kong • Happy Sharing.”

At the inauguration ceremony last week, a hip-hop lion dance, using rhythmic beats instead of the usual drums and gongs, was roundly applauded by the audience.

Hong Kong’s lion dance, which is included as a national intangible cultural heritage, is a form of dance performed at major Chinese festivals. In it, performers mimic a lion’s movements in a lion’s costume.

In Hong Kong, the Ha Kwok Cheung Dragon & Lion Dance Group has a history of more than 90 years. Ha King-man, a fourth-generation performer, has not only inherited the fun images and professional movements, but also combined popular elements to make lion dance more attractive to young people.

Also on display is a lion’s head exhibition featuring both traditional and innovative lion’s heads equipped with LED lights, all of them designed by Hong Kong artists to embody the spirit and characteristics of the island city.

Many of them are presented for the first time in Shanghai.

Moreover, the Hong Kong Plaza has teamed up with a host of cultural institutions to present 10 performances in Shanghai.

Besides a billboard exhibition “Hong Kong Pop Lyrics,” a special event on late singer/actor Leslie Cheung’s music and films will be staged over the weekend. The concert will recall the fond memories of the Hong Kong singer and actor (1956-2003), who is considered one of the founding fathers of Cantopop and combined a hugely successful film with musical career.

In addition, nine “IN Hong Kong” workshops featuring children’s artworks, swing-dance performances and ukulele making will be held so that children can learn more about the pleasures of art and culture in Hong Kong.

“IN Hong Kong • Happy Sharing”
Date: Through July 31,10pm-5pm
Venue: Hong Kong Plaza
Address: 283 Huaihai Rd M.
