Agencies cash in on Korea tourism surge
Travel agencies in Shanghai are cashing in on the boom of South Korean TV dramas that has produced a surge of tourists to the country in pursuit of romantic scenes, particularly women in their 20s to 40s.
There have been a large number of calls from women saying they want to visit the sites where romantic plots were featured after latest hit drama “My Love From the Star” was broadcast, according to officials at travel agencies. The agencies have launched themed tours featuring the spots used in the dramas in Seoul and Gangwon-do, including the site where stars Kim Soo-hyun and Jun Ji-hyun of “My Love From the Star” kissed.
Shanghai Datong Travel Agency said the number of tourists to South Korea soared by 30 percent in February compared with the same period last month, while online travel operator Ctrip said there has been a significant increase in travelers to the country in January and February from the same period last year. They said a convenient visa policy, shopping and competitive tour prices to South Korea are some other reasons.
About 70 percent of tourists organized by Ctrip to South Korea last year were females in their 20s to 40s, it said.
South Korea has long been a popular tourist destination among locals, following Thailand and Japan.
