Air rescue and aid team’s daring missions
Critical moments of life and death are constant memories to all members of the Nanhai No. 1 Flying Service, an air rescue and aid team of the Ministry of Transport.
As the only state-run force of air rescue and aid over waters off south China, the team brought 94 people to safety in 2020 alone.
Amid each onslaught of typhoon, when all ships hasten home, rescue helicopters — nicknamed “magic eagle” by local fishermen — always dash toward the eye of a storm.
Team members were still on watch, away from their families, at their base in Sanya, south China’s Hainan Province, during the Spring Festival holiday.
“There is a mishap behind every need for rescue,” said Captain Wang Chunping, “and it is our ultimate wish that everyone caught up there is returned home safely.”
