AmCham charity glitz
THE American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai rolled out the red carpet for its annual charity gala "Hollywood Lights" at the Pudong Shangri-La Shanghai hotel, to benefit good causes, including needy women and children,
The eighth AmCham Charity Gala on April 10 was sponsored by the American Women's Club of Shanghai to raise funds for the Soong Ching Ling Foundation's Mother and Infant Care Program that provides medical and other services for needy women and children in Yunnan Province.
This year the gala supported three new projects. One funds sustainable rural development in Sichuan Province, and is organized by the Heifer International China Program.
The second project, "A Dream Day at the Zoo," will take chronically ill and children with disabilities to visit the Shanghai Zoo. The third project is the Million Tree Project led by Roots and Shoots Shanghai, which plants thousands of trees in the Eleshun Desert in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
At the gala, the Rolf Becker Band performed classic American movie theme songs, evoking the glamor of Hollywood. Guests posed for photos with Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley wax statues provided by Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum and tried their luck at blackjack, roulette, big and small and Texas Hold'em.
The silent and live auctions featured luxurious spa and personal care treatments, jewelry, luxury hotel stays, Chinese painting, race car driving lessons and a Westin Heavenly Bed.
The raffle's top prize was a round-trip business/first tickets to the United States on Continental Airlines.
The annual charity gala is part of AmCham Shanghai's corporate social responsibility program. Last year's gala was a big success, raising more than 340,000 yuan (US$49,802) to build a senior citizens' activity center in Minle Village, which had been damaged in the Sichuan earthquake in 2008.
AmCham Shanghai extends its thanks to generous donors and sponsors who made this year's gala a success.
