American culture through Chinese eyes
THE 2013 American Culture and Art Season offers a good opportunity for Chinese people to learn about American culture and how it influences Chinese artists.
Various Chinese-American artists will engage in a discussion about the US art scene and lifestyle.
Celebrities attending the event include Miss China Diana Xu, renowned jewelry designer Liao Chen and curator Elizabeth de Brabrant. They are expected to share their experiences in a light-hearted conversation.
Xu uses a piano to tell her story with both grace and poise, presenting her Chinese beauty within the parameters of an American aesthetic.
Designer Liao gives people insight into the US luxury industry and will speak about the impact of American culture on her jewelry design.
"Jewelry is a perfect artwork to pass on our culture and philosophy to the future generations of people," Liao says.
De Brabrant has brought American-style oil paintings that were created by talented Chinese artists Qian Gang and Shen Chen.
The "Swan Series" created by Qian is a portrayal of the relationship between animals and plants. With around 10 years of experience as a farmer, Qian has been incredibly close to nature. The paintings, despite the use of Western techniques, have an Oriental flair. People can find energy and meaning in Qian's paintings.
According to De Brabrant, Shen's paintings show perfect concentration and deliver a sense of peace.
"There are a lot of similarities between Shanghai and New York," De Brabrant says. "Both cities are dynamic, quick to change and have tremendous opportunities."
Qian and Shen's paintings are now being exhibited through May 19 at The View. ICS's microblog on Sina.com will release schedules for other coming events.
