Art by quake kids and young artists

A charity art exhibition "Sparks" features the works of young artists as well as paintings by children orphaned in the Sichuan earthquake of May 2008.

The exhibition is underway through Sunday at the Textiles & Costume Museum in Donghua University.

The exhibition was planned by three high school students and organized by The Library Project (TLP), an NGO, which donates books and creates libraries for poor schools and orphanages in China and Vietnam.

The young artists in the exhibition include Jane Yang, Katie Wu, Shradha Sahu and Laura Lu.

The exhibition also features paintings by students from Beichuan High School near the epicenter of the Sichuan earthquake. Families and children moved to Mianyang and new Beichuan county seat.

"They haven't lost their hope - they learn to express their feelings through art. They didn't give up when they lost their loved ones; they chose to fight on," says William Yu, one of the organizers, a Shanghai-born high school student now studying in the United States.

TLP was founded in 2006 in the US by Tom Stader, who used to work in a video game company but now devotes all his time to charity. TLP has offices in both Xi'an, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, and Shanghai. It has nine staff members and more than 10,000 volunteers including many young students like Yu.

"Our goal is to develop TLP into an organization that helps empower millions of children every year through the gift of education. This goal will take an enormous amount of dedication, planning and hard work," says Ashley Chen, fundraising manager of TLP.

So far TLP has donated more than 700 libraries in poor areas in China and Vietnam, each costing from 13,000 yuan to 19,000 yuan (US$2,063-3,015).

The libraries are filled with colorful local language books either purchased in China or acquired through local community book drives. The reading areas is designed to make children feel comfortable while they nurture their curiosity.
