Artist's sole subject is his son's growth

FOR the past few years, artist Nan Fang from north China's Hebei Province has focused on only one subject, his son.

An exhibition of 30 works featuring the boy in oils, ink-wash and ceramics is underway at M50, the artists' hub.

With a red nose and green hair, the chubby-faced boy grows in his father's paintings.

"I love to depict his every movement, funny and innocent," says the artist. "I really feel that I am growing with him again."

Born in 1976, Nan does not take on the abstract and obscure.

"If you think it's easy to create works like mine, you are wrong," he says, adding that he has studied extensively, both ancient Chinese masterpieces and folk art featuring children.

"It is very important to use the right colors to stimulate the viewer's interest," he adds. "Sometimes I paint the environment through my son's eyes. It's totally different from the adult perspective. I treasure the feeling."

Nan is happy that all stages of his son's growth have been recorded. "I also want to remind people of the simple innocent world seen through the eyes of a child and remind them that they were once children."
