Auction aids Qinghai
A GALA charity auction has raised nearly US$22,000 to help residents of western China's Qinghai Province stay warm and contribute to rebuilding after the May 12 earthquake in 2008.
The auction and gala dinner last Friday was sponsored by Erdos Group, a leading cashmere garment manufacturer that sources a great deal of cashmere wool from Qinghai in the far west. It was held in conjunction with the Shanghai Zeng Ai Foundation.
Auction pieces included a Jin Dynasty (265-420 AD) chicken-head bottle, a Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) clock, a set of 18th-century Russian paintings, cashmere fashion designed by Gilles Dufour and a gold football signed by famous Shanghai female soccer player Sun Wen.
The auction raised 149,000 yuan (US$21,815).
All the proceeds will be donated to people in the disaster area, together with 959 cashmere products valued at more than 790,000 yuan.
"We hope that through the event we could collect more money to help people in need rebuild their confidence in the face of challenges," says Zhang Zhi, CEO of the Erdos Group.
The event was attended by more than 200 entrepreneurs, artists and celebrities, including actress Bao Lei, model Song Shanshan and pop star Song Xiaobo.
Meanwhile, the Shanghai Public Relations Association held its 5th Shanghai PR Excellence Awards ceremony last week. The competition is held every two years among professional PR agencies, nonprofit organizations and government departments covering many fields and events.
The two top winners were the World Expo 2010 exhibition by the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination and the 10,000 People's Trip in Taiwan by Amway China.
