Auld lang syne: remembering 2017 with a ‘cup o’ kindness’

THE State Council, China’s cabinet, gave Shanghai an end-of-year bonus by approving the city’s blueprint for becoming a “global city of excellence” by 2035.

The plan commits Shanghai to creating a stellar urban area of innovation, eco-friendliness and humanism. It envisions a city at the vanguard of business opportunities and new commercial models. It also seeks to develop Shanghai’s cultural uniqueness and create an ambient lifestyle for all residents to enjoy.

As we look back on 2017, we see changes afoot. The iconic old Shanghai No. 1 Department Store has been upgraded to a new shopping center in tune with new consumer concepts. Older establishments that fell afoul of competition or changing tastes either closed or undertook renovation. Shanghai hosted the opening of Starbucks’ first overseas roastery and the maiden test flight of China’s first domestically designed and manufactured passenger jet aircraft.

Shanghai Daily photographers Wang Rongjiang, Dong Jun and Jiang Xiaowei recorded for posterity the year that was.
