Ballroom, Latin and sports dance on tap
THOUSANDS of dancers from around the world are gathering in Shanghai this weekend to take part in three major world competitions at the Shanghai Luwan Stadium.
The three to be held tomorrow and Sunday are the Shui On Yong Ye Cup WDSF (World Dance Sport Federation) Grand Slam Final (Standard/Latin); the 9th China Shanghai International Open Standard/Latin; and the 2012 China Dance Sport Federation Elites.
The WDSF Grand Slam Final has attracted 12 pairs of the world's best dancers in both Standard and Latin.
This is the first time the China Dance Sport Federation Elites will be held in Shanghai, and the country will select its national team and Olympics team for sport dance in the competition.
The event is jointly organized by the World Dance Sport Federation, Society Sports Guidance Center under General Administration of Sport of China, Shanghai Sports Bureau, Shanghai Huangpu District government and Chinese Dance Sports Federation.
A press conference will be held today in Xintiandi area before the championship to introduce the athletes. A few dance fans will attend the press conference and speak with the athletes. Interested dancers can log on to the Huangpu District's official microblog. (http://weibo.com/u/2557155457).
This year organizers built a curved auditorium to give the audience a better view. LED screens have been added.
The competition has become a significant platform for athletes to demonstrate their skills. It has also generated local interest, since hundreds of thousands of people will watch the event later on television.
