Belt and Road, traditional Chinese opera part of festivities
‘BELT and Road’ films
This year’s film festival will screen more than 20 movies from countries that were part of the Silk Road route. Malaysian film “Singing in Graveyards” deals with the story of a 68-year-old music lover; “Hema Hema: Sing Me a Song While I Wait” is a film about a traditional ritual in the Kingdom of Bhutan; “Saving Sally” is a romantic film from the Philippines; “Parting” is an Afghan adventure; and “The Constitution” takes us to Croatia.
Among others are Romanian biopic “Scarred Hearts” and Macedonian war film “The Liberation of Skopje.”
The films will highlight the culture, society, history and arts of the respective country.
Today, 15 countries including India, Romania, Greece, Hungary and Israel will sign a memorandum on film exchange and cooperation, leading to joint-venture productions.
The Belt and Road Initiative theme will also be addressed at the film forums. A “Belt and Road” exhibition hall will be set in the film market to showcase achievements and projects from these countries.
Traditional opera films
Traditional Chinese opera movies will be showcased for the first time at the film festival. In 1905, the first Chinese movie “Dingjun Mountain” dealt with Peking Opera artist Tan Xinpei (1847-1917).
Since then, traditional opera films have played an important role in Chinese cinema.
Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang (1894-1961) also starred in many films such as “Chunxiang Disturbs the Studies” and “Shattering Flowers.” His stunning performances in the movies are considered a cultural heritage.
From the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s, China produced around 90 traditional opera films. In the last three years, a total of 62 such films were produced.
Films with high artistry and popularity will be screened, including “The Orphan of Zhao,” “Lady General Mu Takes Command” and “Xiao He Chases Han Xin Under the Moonlight.” Most of the films are based on historical stories and legends. Well-known traditional opera artists will be invited to talk on the subject.
