Box office set to top 50b yuan this year
CHINA’S box-office receipts have already topped 48.7 billion yuan (US$6.78 billion) this year, indicating a significant revival trend in the domestic film industry, according to box-office tracker Lighthouse.
With dozens of new releases in the coming months, the national box-office income for the full year is likely to exceed 50 billion yuan.
China has submitted “The Wandering Earth II” as its representative film for the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars.
Raking in more than US$600 million, the sci-fi blockbuster is among the highest-grossing films of the year. Directed by Frant Gwo and starring Wu Jing, Andy Lau and Li Xuejian, the film is a prequel to 2019’s “The Wandering Earth.”
This month, several highly anticipated films are slated to be released.
