Carrying on a kite-making family tradition

YANG Hongwei, born into a kite-making family in Weifang’s Yangjiabu Village in east China’s Shandong Province, embarked on her journey of making kites in 1982 under the guidance of her grandfather.

Over the past four decades, Yang has been developing the cultural inheritance, which has brought her many accolades. As a kite-making master, she has been invited to other countries, including Germany, Australia, the United States and New Zealand, to promote kite-flying culture and train apprentices.

Renowned as the home of kites, the city of Weifang has more than 300 kite manufacturers with yearly output of 2 billion yuan (US$310 million). Their kites are sold in more than 40 countries and regions, making up 85 percent of the domestic and 75 percent of the world markets.
