Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center to perform at Shanghai Concert Hall
CHAMBER Music Society of Lincoln Center (CMS) will present three concerts till May 14 as part of the 2017 Mini Music Festival of Shanghai Concert Hall.
Led by pianist Wu Han and cellist David Finckel, the musicians will present nine chamber pieces in the three concerts. That includes the Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 13 in B-flat major, and String Quartet in B-flat major, Dvorak’s Quintet in A major for Piano and Terzetto in C major for Two Violins and Viola, Brahms’s Sonata No.1 in E minor for Cello and Piano and Sextet No.2 in G major for Two Violins, Two Violas and Two Cellos, Strauss’s Sextet for Strings from Capriccio, Schoenberg’s “Transfigured Night” and Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-flat major for Strings.
“There are many great chamber music repertoires that connect people emotionally, which we would always love to share with the audiences,” said pianist Wu, who is also one of the CMS artistic directors.
According to her, many of the great pieces tell stories of the composer at the time. For example, Brahms told his regret about breaking the promise of marriage with his fiancée in his “Sextet No.2 in G major for Two Violins, Two Violas and Two Cellos”. He spelt the message “Agathe Farewell” by notes in music.
“We will share the story with audiences before each concert. Hopefully, the stories will help them appreciate the music better and probably get addicted to chamber music,” said Wu.
Growing up in Taiwan before furthering her study in the US since 21, Gu was aware of the lacking chamber music training for most music students in China.
“I was lucky to have a teacher warning me that I would only become a good piano player rather than musician if I knew nothing about collaboration in chamber music,” said Gu, “I took his advice and benefited a lot from that. I hope that we will help guiding more audiences getting to know chamber music on broader platforms.”
