Charity troupe and chime concert

THE Bells of Shaughnessy ensemble will present a charity concert at Shanghai Concert Hall on March 24, directed by master Chen Shanshan.
Compositions, accompanied by handbells and chimes, include "Fengyang Flower Drum," "The Butterfly Lovers," "Spring Breeze," "The Nutcracker" and "Carmen."
Founded in Vancouver in 2004, the ensemble includes young musicians who have a strong musical background.
The choir's aim is to contribute to charitable causes. And for the upcoming Shanghai performance, the proceeds will be donated to Hope Schools.
"We deeply believe that not only can music relax and comfort the mind, but also it can spread love and dreams to the world," says Chen, founder and director of the group. She is a classically trained musician and piano teacher.
The troupe will also perform at the Shanghai Children's Welfare Institute.
The Bells of Shaughnessy raised around 70,000 yuan (US$11,244) in 2008 for victims of the Sichuan Earthquake on May 12, 2008.
The choir organizes concerts with many other musicians and performed to raise money for victims of flooding in Taiwan several years ago.
In 2009, Bells of Shaughnessy performed 14 charity concerts around China to raise funds for Red Cross orphanages. They raised around 120,000 yuan over 23 days.
"We aspire to spread love, passion and beautiful bell music to the world and encourage young students, like the singers, to also participate in charity," Chen says.
