Classic version of ‘Romeo and Juliet’ returning
FRENCH composer Gerard Presgurvic’s interpretation of “Romeo and Juliet” will return to Shanghai in April.
“Bringing ‘Romeo and Juliet’ back in Shanghai again is like meeting a long-time-no-see friend,” said Eric Dumesnil, who has produced the musical since 2010.
“It is worth looking forward to — audiences may find it somewhat different to what they have seen before.”
Presgurvic’s version of the classic Shakespeare romance premiered in Paris in 2001 and has been seen by more than 6.5 million people around the world and been translated into more than 10 languages.
It was performed at the Shanghai Culture Square in 2012 for 16 days.
Damien Sargue, who played Romeo in the Paris premiere, will take to the stage again for the Shanghai shows.
“I played Romeo for 10 years since I was 19,” he said. “It was already part of my life. “So, when Presgurvic asked whether I was available for Romeo again, I said yes with no hesitation.”
As a fan of Chinese calligraphy, Sargue had the Chinese characters for Romeo tattooed on his arm during the musical’s Asian tour.
Clemence Illiaque will play Juliet.
The SAIC Shanghai Culture Square will also host Broadway musicals “Cats” and “Rent,” according to Jin Huanhuan who has been introducing overseas musicals to China since 2015, including “Wicked” earlier this year.
To encourage more young people to attend performances, the culture square will offer discounts of up to 50 percent for residents aged 15-25 on the 25th of each month.
