Eaton employees work to make a difference

CHARITY work is not merely about donating resources to poor areas. Power management company Eaton takes a different approach to corporate social responsibility.

Through its “Powering Communities Grants” concept, Eaton helps improve the quality of life in the communities where its employees live, work and volunteer.

The company lets its employees determine where their donations will go based on the needs of their communities.

These donations go to hundreds of local organizations every year, while Eaton employees also volunteer their own time to local causes.

“The Eaton Charitable Fund encourages employees to explore local needs and get involved in real community work,” says Chen Zhuoya, community affairs manager at Eaton in China. “By building connections with people within the local community, and thus supporting good causes via company resources, we can see how small efforts can make a big difference year by year.”

United Way ranks first among the many organizations Eaton supports.

United Way Worldwide and the Shanghai Charity Foundation have been working together to improve lives through education in the Shanghai region. Eaton has also played a role.

Max Li, vice president at Asia Pacific of United Way Worldwide, says: “Eaton has long been committed to social responsibility. It has been supporting many United Way programs around the world.

“Furthermore, we feel privileged to get great support from Eaton’s leadership team in Asia Pacific for this education program,” he adds.

In January, Eaton cooperated with the Shanghai Charity Foundation-United Way Fund to launch a three-year project to provide pre-school education to children of migrant workers. About 6,000 children aged 3 to 6 years will benefit from the project.

In August, Eaton donated US$15,000 to support the Early Childhood Education Program. The donation from the Eaton Charitable Fund will be used to upgrade the preschools the children attend.

“We are proud to partner with organizations that foster education and improve the quality of life for many migrant children in our local communities,” says Curt Hutchins, president of Eaton Asia Pacific, “Promoting healthy communities is a vital component of Eaton’s commitment to sustainability. We’re proud to be able to give something back to the communities in which we work."
