Elder’s livestream boost to village economy

Dakang Village, more than 1,000 meters above sea level, is located deep in the Taihang Mountains, which ranges across Beijing and the provinces of Hebei, Shanxi and Henan.

Living in this almost inaccessible rural backwater, villagers were nearly cut off from the outside world.

Generations have tilled the mountain lands making little money. And in recent years, all of the village’s young people have left to work outside the village, with only a few old people left.

Li Sanping is among those elders. He was once the village Party secretary, who led the village to develop. In 2018, the village began to develop a special agricultural products’ industry and tourism, thanks to the local government’s preferential policies to support agriculture.

Earlier this year, Li joined his son Li Qingbin’s smartphone livestreaming idea to promote the village’s agricultural products, which has been greatly encouraged by netizens.

After his mobile phone debut, Li Sanping was deeply attracted by this new trend.

With his son’s help, Li registered an online livestreaming account, bought some basic equipment, and set about promoting his village’s tourism resources and specialities.

Now, each of Li’s livestreaming sessions can draw more than 2,000 viewers, making him a local online celebrity.

With his efforts, the village has sold more agricultural products than ever, and saw an increasing number of tourists.
